View Full Version : Frank Miller's 300

[Backstory] So... me and the gf went to watch Rocky Balboa Saturday evening (same old same old, which is NOT a bad thing, we both thoroughly enjoyed the movie!) but before the movie they showed a trailer of a new movie based on Frank Miller (from Sin City fame) comic book: 300...
[Uh...Main Content..I think] It looks pretty awesome, it's about these 300 badass Spartans (erm,I think they're called Greeks today ;) ) that defend a pass against (queue Dr Evil Voice) ONE MILLION Persians..or something like that...
It looks totally cool, with a very distinctive look, almost like everything as painted, or like a animated comic book, (or graphic novel, or whatever you want to call it) so because this trailer got me totally pumped I went and searched for it on IMDB (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0416449/)... I checked the user comments (as I usually do), and I found this little gem there, I almost rofled off my chair when I read this:
(uhm,I hid it behind a little spoiler thingy, I don't think it's too crude, but just in case there's some parents out there that don't want their kiddos reading this TOO easily)
Stunning in almost every way., 17 February 2007
Author: Jeff from Maryland
I just saw a movie that'll give your eyes boners, make your balls scream and make you poop DVD copies of THE TRANSPORTER. It's called 300. I don't know what the title has to do with the movie, but they could have called it KITTENS MAKING CANDLES and it'd still rule. It's about these 300 Greek dudes who stomp the sugar-coated sh-- out of like a million other dudes. I have a feeling that a lot of high school sports coaches are going to show this film to their teams before they play. Also, gay dudes and divorced women are going to use screen captures for computer wallpaper. The movie takes place about a million years ago, and it's sort of like a prequel to SIN CITY. Except way less guns and cars but twice as much skull splitting. If you watch this movie and go into a Taco Bell, and say to the cashier, "I need some extra sauce packets" guess what? You're getting twenty sauce packets because the look on your face will punch him in the brain. I can't spoil the plot because THERE ISN'T ONE. Just ass kicking that kicks ass that, while said ass is getting kicked, is kicking yet more ass that's hitting someone's balls with a hammer made of ice but the ice is frozen whiskey.
TWO COOL THINGS ABOUT THE MOVIE AND ONE THING I DIDN'T LIKE: COOL THING ONE: HEAVY METAL MUSIC DURING BATTLE SCENES: Who gives a sh-- if the music isn't historically correct? LORD OF THE RINGS could have used some Journey. This movie has that chu-CHUNG kind of metal that you hear in your head when your shift supervisor at Starbucks is telling you that you'll have to stay late for clean-up and you wish you had a sock filled with quarters in your hand.
COOL THING TWO: FOES, MINI-BOSSES AND A BIG BOSS: Basically, the Greek dudes are fighting these Persian dudes, but the director, who must have a dick made of three machine guns, does it all like a video game. The Greeks fight every death metal video from the last ten years. There's wave after wave of giants, freaks, ninjas, mutants, wizards, and a hunchback who looks like he's got Rosie O'Donnell on his back. Would I have been happy if Dom DeLuise from HISTORY OF THE WORLD, PART I had shown up? Maybe, but this movie more than makes up for that glaring oversight.
NOT SO GOOD THING: DUDE NUDITY ("DUDE-ITY"): These were Greek times, when there were a lot of naked women around. And there are some naked women in this film, but almost every naked woman scene has a muscular dude giving the screen an ass picnic. Dude-ity is something directors put in their movies so people will think they're serious, I guess, and not just throwing in naked hotties. Any directors reading this - IT'S OKAY TO JUST THROW IN NAKED HOTTIES. Can't someone make a movie about naked Amazons and call it "PAUSE BUTTON"?
My final analysis is 300 the most ass-ruling movie I've seen this year, and will probably be the King of 2007 unless someone makes a movie where a pair of sentient boobs fights a werewolf.

ooooooh another review:
Short quote from the review!
In fact, “Rings” devotees may wish to avoid “300,” because after seeing Frank Miller’s widescreen illustrations come to life and start moving, leaping, hacking, gouging, tearing and bleeding all over their neighborhood IMAX, the Tolkien trilogy will be reduced to little more than the very long story of a schizophrenic Muppet and his curiously affectionate companions. And I love those movies!

Well, let's not get ahead of ourselves there. I think it will still be a long time until someone tops the mastery of peter Jackson's LOTR adaption. Not saying 300 is bad, but that's just exaggeration there...

The hard core spike-your-adrenaline get-you-wanting-to-beat-the-$#%$#^-out-of-everybuddy clinch about this movie is
1.) It's based on a true story
2.) in true story : every Spartan to the last man stands his ground and dies
I read a dramatisation of this called "Theopolus" (or "Theopolis") ... awesome book. Being half greek and reading this it was hard not to associate myself with the story. One interesting thing picked up from the book is that if you were a Spartan picked for the assignment; you were only picked if you had children already. Single men, Husbands with no kids were not part of the 300... as they had no legacy behind to continue their name. they went knowing they would die. The plan was to have them hold up at a pass and keep the persians at bay long enough for the rest of Greece to rally and get their army together for a counter attack.
300 Spartans died... nearly 15000 Persians died at that pass !!! And the Spartans were only taken, when one of the Greek Villagers betrayed them and showed the persians a secret back route into the pass.... the persians sent a few thousand men through the back pass and hit them from both sides ... Every Spartan went down fighting ... but they saved the rest of Greece ... their families included.
Gives me goosebumps thinking about the story... get the book if you can ...read it before the movie... it's awesome !!
I can imagine the movie will be too.... regardless one what one poor Iranian idiot has to say about wrecking ISLAM... ISLAM was nowhere near as much of a force then as it is now (If my history is correct this event was before Mohammed was around)

yah well it's based off a comic book... so you're realism-o-meter should be safely tucked away to avoid permanent damage when you're going to watch this... ;)

19th March 2007, 12:27 PM
@Wingnut: Unless that comic book is filed in the historical section if a library then, I think it was a pretty good film, that said, at times it does seem a lil un-realistic, hence the 'its a movie' tag :)
But IMO it was a pretty good film.

The wonderful thing about a Frank Miller production is that the hype never surpasses the film. You'll see Titan, it's just awesome.
Can't wait for Sin City 2 & 3, extremely happy that Rodriguez (Desperado, Sin City 1, once upon a time in Mexico) is involved.
Next film to watch out for: GRINDHOUSE!
If you don't know anything about it - go check it out on IMDB.com and YouTube. It's going to be fantastic!

yeah i loved that too wizard! :D but i think my favourite was when the persian messanger comes to sparta and is speaking to the king then the queen buts in and the persian tunes summing like "how can you let a woman talk among men?" and she tunes "because only spartan women give birth to real men"

Reading this again, I am literally drooling, it was a fantastic film.
I think what I loved about it so much is that it's EXACTLY how the story would've been told and retold to the generations to come, men with bigger muscles, bigger beasts...
And if you ever have an opportunity to lay your hands on the comic book, you'll see that they used images from that graphic novel "as is" in the film.
The I ask myself - where do people get the time to come up with these:

LOL I prefered the fight sequences in Troy, granted they were one on one. Hmmm :self doubt: I might ned to watch Troy again for fresh comparison. I've seen 300 twice. Once was more than enough I felt it was overkill but then they were going for a comic book effect which is by nature over the top.

Man this film was sweet ... the amount of references everyone makes to it months down the line is proof thereof.
When we go rock jumping we sparta kick each other off the rocks, for shits and giggles... but not before the one being sparta kicked asks a simple offering of Earth and Water :D
My mate had sunblock on his chest the one day when i sparta kicked him and my foot slipped. I caught him in the jugular and sent him flying down. He wasn't a happy camper after that.

Aaaah, the dreaded escalator handrails, a black yucky substance on the side of escalators that is only used by childrens (who are scared of escalators after having eaten KFC), and carriers of the plague.
My favorite is to grab it and pull it hard so that those that are leaning on it get their arms misplaced, and they have to relocate their grip to a new suitably more KFC and plagues infested location.

Something I dont understand though ... when people climb onto an escallator. Why do they stop walking ? Do you stop walking when you get to stairs ? I don't. I walk. It's only natural. unless something's blocking your path.
speaking of fish, my mate's girlfriend's younger sister once kicked the emergency stop button for the escallators on purpose. The word of the day was mass-anti_whiplash..sort of in slow mo. anyway, back to the story..

/derailment continues
GreenStone mall (brand spanking new) has escalators that go into slow mode, and when you cross a beam at the entrance to the escalators, they speed up again.
I'm trying to find a way to stop the beam from being "broken" by people entering the escalator, that way the bastards will actually have to walk cos slow is really slow. If you jump over the beam and don't trigger the fast mode, it takes 40 seconds to get down.
And .. them "moving floor" thingys at airports ... they also stand still on them things and then start having telephone conversations, so that you are forced to bump their elbows as you sprint past, forcing them to throw their cell phones into the non moving part which they'll have to go back for .. :sneaky: .. I love building up a good sprint on them cos the wind flies past and the end is really exciting.
